Fairy tales

This project explores how fairy tales reinforce misogynoir by examining the association of femininity with whiteness and its impact on Black womanhood. Building on previous Project Almost Human, Not quite woman , it delves into the social dynamics reflected in fairy tales, particularly their origins in 19th-century European societies during slavery. By analysing themes of racism, classism, and misogyny in these narratives, the project aims to expand visual language and world-building. Influences include 19th-century decorative arts, the Arts and Crafts movement and Surrealism informs the exploration of how whiteness is linked to virtue, reinforcing biases against Black women.
